Highview Power Carrington – LAES Project (FOAK)
50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage Facility | Greater Manchester

First‑of‑a‑kind, commercial‑scale greenfield delivery of a 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, supporting long‑duration energy storage and the UK’s net‑zero transition.

The project utilises proprietary LAES technology, converting surplus renewable electricity into stored liquid air, with later pressurisation and reheating to drive turbines for electricity generation.

Role / Scope (Bilfinger UK):

  • Principal contractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation (MEI) construction, including structural steelwork
  • Delivery of complex, safety‑critical systems within a novel technology environment
  • Working within a large high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary integrated delivery team on a technically challenging FOAK scheme

A landmark project combining innovation, engineering excellence, and collaboration to deliver one of the UK’s most advanced energy storage assets.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Engineering Project Manager is required for the management and delivery for AFD/ AFC packages supplied by the client. As the first and single responsible Bilfinger person and first focal point for the project team. 
  • Together with the team of Work Package Engineers and Field Engineers, you are responsible for the control of multi-discipline engineering packages from the client and primary interface within the construction team.
  • Primary interface with clients technical packages and responsible for the management and delivery of Technical Queries and RFIs’
  • You are responsible to develop, manage and complete these interfaces in accordance with the project schedule. This includes all aspects of managing and controlling change, and leading management of change impact for cost and schedule

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

If you have the following profile, then we are looking forward to meeting you

  • Extensive experience as an Engineering Manager or Project Manager, in multi-discipline projects, in an Engineering / EPCM / EPC company, in one of the above mentioned sectors
  • Experience setting up an project schedule and project reporting system
  • Extensive experience in project information management controls including EDMS
  • Experiences in risk management and mitigation
  • Good knowledge of the main engineering and design disciplines: Automation, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Piping, EC&I and Process
  • Sound practical knowledge of and experience with various phases of engineering and construction projects – concept, FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning
  • Experience and good understanding of working with the common standard forms of contract (NEC3 and 4, )
  • Result oriented. You are only satisfied after your engineering and design is accepted by the client, you delivered top quality and the client is very satisfied with the performance of you and your team
  • You plan and organise your activities before you allow your team to start spending hours. You understand the dependencies of the engineering activities within the project, but also the dependencies between the other disciplines. You have a ‘one time right’ mentality
  • You are capable of identifying growth within the company with support to sales, business management, company procedures and strategies
  • You delegate to your team, but at the same time you know exactly what is going on in your project, and intervene if required
  • You implement a solid change control procedure for your team, and you can convince the client of the budget and planning consequences of changes
  • You can lead and motivate your team so that they achieve the targets, also in case of setbacks
  • Preferred:
    • BSc / BEng / MSc or Equivalent in relevant Engineering discipline
    • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer
    • Qualification from APM (Association for Project Management)
    • Experience as an EPM in highly regulated process Industries such as Nuclear, Oil & Gas, NGT or Pharmaceutical would be considered an advantage
