The Role

The Commissioning Engineer plays a key role in supporting the safe and efficient commissioning of gas infrastructure projects. Working within a growing and collaborative commissioning team, the role involves hands-on involvement in site activities, technical problem-solving, documentation, and client support. The role will require the individual to work on their own initiative to pre-FAT systems, FAT, on site commissioning and SAT, either individually or in pairs depending on projects. The role will require experience in hazardous/explosive atmospheres with a good understanding of ATEX directives. This is a development-focused role, ideal for someone looking to build a long-term engineering career in the gas sector.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Undertake and support commissioning activities across various projects, ensuring delivery in line with the agreed scope, schedule, and standards.
  • Assist with technical commissioning tasks, system testing, and troubleshooting, both on-site and remotely.
  • Work closely with the Senior Commissioning Engineer(s) and Commissioning Manager to execute project plans and commissioning procedures.
  • Attend client sites to conduct inspections, test equipment, and resolve technical issues.
  • Accurately record commissioning progress, test results, and fault reports using company systems and documentation templates.
  • Liaise with project teams to ensure commissioning aligns with design requirements and client expectations.
  • Participate in training, both as a learner and as a contributor, to help develop personal and team-wide technical competencies.
  • Support lessons-learned reviews and contribute to improving commissioning practices across the business.
  • Comply with the organisation’s QA and SHE systems, policies and procedures; support required updates as the business develops.
  • Ensure all site activities comply with CDM 2015 Regulations and health & safety legislation.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and hazards, to the site supervisor or your line manager
  • Represent the company on client sites liaising where necessary with client representatives and conduct yourself in a manner that is professional and supportive.
  • Attend and contribute to project meetings, offering insights on commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with design specifications, industry standards, and project requirements.
  • Conduct quality checks and ensure defects are identified, reported to QEMS team and rectified promptly.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and best practices on-site.
  • Attend all required company and department meetings
  • Attend training courses relevant to the position.
  • Support the creation and delivery of training activities for colleagues and clients.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum qualification: City & Guilds, ONC or HNC in an engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a technical or commissioning role, ideally within the gas industry or similar sector.
  • Ability to understand and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, able to advise clients on the drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in working with gas metering systems, gas analysis instruments or flow control and pressure control loops, with a good understanding of all process instrumentation and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge/Understanding of PLC controllers.
  • Strong Control & Instrumentation (C&I) background, with basic mechanical understanding.
  • Experience in hazardous areas/explosive atmospheres and ATEX/DSEAR directives.
  • Ideally have a familiarisation of gas odourisation and gas chromatography – Desirable not essential.
  • Ideally have a knowledge of Gas Transmission and/or Distribution Network Design Processes (G35/G17/PS5/GL5). – Desirable not essential.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent understanding of health & safety best practices and risk management.
  • Positive attitude and ability to multi-task without instruction.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks effectively.

Essential Certificates & Training

  • EUSR / SHEA Gas registration (or equivalent)
  • Ideally SCO91 (can be trained)
  • Valid full UK driving license
