Position Summary

Instrumentation and Control Engineers select and implement process control equipment and instrumentation on technical projects for biopharmaceutical equipment. As a member of a collaborative team, the “Instrumentation and Control Engineer” coordinates with external team members such as clients and engineering firms as well as internal team members such as mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, installation and commissioning personnel. Internal team members are located primarily in Salzburg, Austria and St. Louis, MO. Project size and scope will vary. Project focus will be on the development of biopharmaceutical and traditional pharmaceutical process equipment skids.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development of functional design specifications, process controls and automation concepts
  • Calculation of components and instrumentation specifications
  • Provide technical guidance to internal & external team members
  • Monitoring compliance with applicable laws, GMP guidelines, GAMP
  • Collaboration on process flow diagrams and P&ID diagrams
  • Assist in coordination of specification review meetings to develop or confirm scope of work including exceptions and clarifications.
  • Support preparation of client proposals
  • Planning and carrying out of commissionings
  • Creating project documentations and assisting with qualifications
  • Act as the customer’s point of contact for I&C related project issues, with responsibility for managing customer satisfaction.

 

 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in applicable discipline; Electrical, Chemical or Bio Engineering preferred
  • 2+ years of comprehensive professional experience in the field of process automation, instrumentation and control for the pharmaceutical industry or a similar FDA regulated industry
  • Detailed knowledge of the cGMP/cGAMP regulations relevant for pharmaceutical plant construction
  • Detailed knowledge of US rules and guidelines for low-power systems and cabinets
  • Experience with the commissioning, documentation and qualification of the control system of process plants
  • Experience executing multi discipline designs in an integrated approach
  • Experience with MS Office software suite; Experience with PLC programming tools is preferred; Experience with SAP is a plus.
  • Excellent self-organization skills and a structured personal working style
  • Flexibility with time management as well as willingness to travel - around 30% business trips within N. America. Travel to Europe required for training (Austria).
 

Technical Knowledge and Skills

 

  • One to two years technical education beyond High School or four years of equivalent experience.
  • Technical know-how
  • IT-knowledge (MS Office, PLC programming tools)
  • Eloquent personality
  • High flexibility and willingness to travel
  • Ability to work in a team

 

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.

  • Ability to stand (for extended periods of time), walk, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, and twist.

  • Ability to carry tools.
  • Ability to move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas.
  • Ability to work up to a 12-hour shift in all weather and temperature extremes.
  • Vision adequate to perform all required tasks.
